Halym Kim
Halym Kim is a drummer and composer based in Copenhagen, navigating the intersections of experimental, free improvisation, and contemporary music. Active across Denmark, Germany, and South Korea, his work embodies a deep exploration of transcultural and multidirectional awareness, seamlessly merging traditions with contemporary sonic landscapes.
At the core of his artistic vision is the pursuit of new ways to integrate elements of traditional Korean music into contemporary experimental expressions. This research unfolds through his solo performances, his ensemble Halym Kim’s Bijul, and the boundary-pushing collective INklang.
Beyond these projects, Halym is a member in a range of ensembles, including Tactical Maybe, Hey Nana, I’m Halym, and Hyper Elastic Jinx, each expanding the possibilities of musical expressions. His journey has taken him to stages across Germany, Denmark, Sweden, the Czech Republic, Lithuania, the USA, and South Korea.
On his way he worked with musicians like Nana Pi, Keisuke Matsuno, Signe Emmeluth, Tom Blancarte, Louise D.E. Jensen, Axel Dörner, Henrik Olsson, Francesco Bigoni, Jonas Engel, Jacob Anderskov, Lotte Anker, Morten Carlsen, Thomas Zoller, Barry Guy and many more.
Holding a Bachelor’s degree in Jazz Drums from the Hochschule für Musik Carl Maria von Weber in Dresden and a Master’s in Music Performance from RMC, Halym further deepened his artistic inquiry with an Advanced Postgraduate Diploma at RMC, where he conducted an artistic research titled “Gravity and Breathing as an Integrated Musical Frame.”
A versatile performer, he also brings his expertise in traditional Korean percussion to the stage, collaborating with ensembles such as Doodulsori and Ensemble Gamuak. His work is a dialogue between past and future, structure and spontaneity – always seeking new musical frontiers.
